Maggies cancer caring centres

Almost Athletes support Maggie's Centre

Maggie Keswick Jencks identified a need for information and support for patients with a cancer diagnosis whilst receiving treatment for breast cancer in Edinburgh in 1993. She believed that this would be most effective received near to the place of treatment in a purpose designed friendly environment. A team of health professionals, friends and family lead the creation of the first centre in Edinburgh in 1996.

Maggie's centres are for anyone who has or who has had cancer; their carers, their families and their friends. The aim is to help people with cancer to be as healthy in mind and body as possible and to allow them the opportunity to make their own contribution to their treatment and recovery. The centres provide information for all aspects of living with cancer. They give people the opportunity to share experiences with others in similar situations as well as access to professionals to inform patients regarding medical aspects of their condition.

Each Maggie’s centre is situated close to a major cancer hospital treatment centre and in Cheltenham, the centre will be built near to the Oncology Centre which is based at Cheltenham General Hospital. The oncology centre provides treatment for patients in the 3 Counties Cancer Network (Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and South Worcestershire). £2.5 million pounds is required for the Maggie’s Cotswolds centre in Cheltenham, which will pay for building and running costs for the first 2 years. Currently there is about £1million in the bank. Building is due to start at the beginning of March 2008 with plans to complete by the end of 2008.
