Race The Train, Tywyn Mid Wales, 16 August 08

Rob Hume finds sunshine in Wales
Rob Hume - Sunny in Wales, again!

Rob Hume led the Almost Athletes along the 15 mile Race The Train route in Tywyn Mid Wales, following the Talyllyn Railway on its journey to Abergynolwyn and back. Encountering a mixture of public roads, lanes, tracks, agricultural land, and rough grazing pastures, the team traversed very wet and muddy and sometimes steep terrain but didn't manage to finish ahead of the train. Currently training for the Amsterdam marathon, Rob came home in 2 hours 3 minutes followed by the club's first lady, Lynne Kitson and Ed Cane who are also aiming to take on the Dutch 26.2 miler.

2008 Bugatti Beer Race

The Almost Athletes were out in force with no less than 63 runners at the 2008 Bugatti Beer Race - traditionally a popular fixture within the club.

David Asbridge was the first club member over the finishing line outside the Bugatti pub and his time of 36.41 secured him 10th place overall in the race. The battle for second placed Almost was won by Dale Midwinter who crossed the line in 43.34, some 11 seconds ahead of Evan Stanley. Paul Crossley who, along with David Asbridge achieved a gold medal for cycling at the recent La Marmotte Sportif in the French Alps, put in an equally impressive running performance to clock 44.50. Duncan Mounsor managed to hold off an eager Ali Shaikh who pipped Ken Sears at the post and achieved his goal of beating 45 minutes to achieve a PB for the course of 44.52. Karen Galpin was the first lady Almost to complete the undulating course, finishing in a time of 47.15 closely followed by her brother John Bailey with Mark Willicott and John Galpin just behind, running neck and neck towards to the finish line to clock equal times of 47.41. Ingrid Harris was 2nd lady Almost home in 48.24 and Anne-Marie Willicott 3rd in 50.43. Other runners included Michelle Carroll and Bill Jones - both currently recovering from injury, and Gail and Graham Beddis for whom the Bugatti was the last run before the London triathlon on the 9th and 10th of August.

Gloucester Half Marathon

Very hot weather conditions and virtually no breeze did not bode well on Sunday for the Almost Athletes who competed in the Gloucester Half Marathon at Newent. The heat and the undulating nature of the course prevented any personal bests and proved testing for all runners. Chris Midgley was the first club runner to cross the line at Newent Leisure Centre in 1.37.45, hotly pursued by Ed Collier who finished in 1 hour 38 minutes and in the process claimed the 2nd County MV50 award. Dale Midwinter ran well under the difficult conditions but could not match his personal best time of 1 hour 37 minutes for this course. He was followed in by Duncan Mounsor. Karen Galpin was first lady for the club and achieved the 1st County LV45 award.

Ed Cane held the fastest time of the four with a total of 46.06, closely followed by Rob Hume in 47.16. Carl Hartley completed the 3 stages in 50.48 and Martin Workman in 56.02.

Devil's Chimney Chase

Although many club members offered their services as marshalls, the Almost Athletes still managed 25 runners in the second year of the Devil's Chimney Chase - an 'Almost' 10K race over Leckhampton Hill with glorious view of the Cotswolds. Fair weather prevailed as over 150 runners took off from The Old Pat's Rugby ground and made their way up very challenging hilly tracks along The Cotswold Way to the top of Leckhampton Hill and then took on an exhilirating but very steep descent to the finish in the field by the Old Pat's club house.

The first Almost Athlete home and third overall across the line was David Asbridge in 40.03. Matt Reid was close behind in 44.08, pursued by Andy Bullingham who managed a strong finish of 45.53. The first lady home for the club was Ingrid Harris who was also 2nd LV45.

The children's races consisted of The Stinger Mile - which was won by Matt Bedwell in 8 minutes 26 with Faith Bowerman first girl in 9.08 - and the under 10's race which was won by Tom Stanley.

Karen Galpin was first lady home for the club in 44.50 closely followed by Phil Withers and then John Galpin who was very satisfied with a PB of 45.36. Dave Elliott, who is currently training for an August marathon, completed the course in 48.13, just ahead of regular 10K runner Martyn Fisher. Graham and Gail Beddis, who are currently training for the London Triathlon in August, paced the race well and crossed the line in 50.56 and 59.12 respectively.

Copenhagen Marathon
Ali in Copenhagen Almost Athlete Ali Shaikh successfully completed his first marathon in Copenhagen at the weekend and managed to easily break the 4 hour barrier with an impressive debut time of 3.53.26. Ali, who travelled to Copenhagen with team mate and supporter Dave Davey, has been completing long weekend training runs with fellow London Marathon club runners to prepare for his first attempt at the 26.2 mile distance. He found the last 5K incredibly hard but enjoyed the whole marathon experience.
